Our Activities Director, Stef Flores, turned the patio into a safe and social-distanced space for residents to go outside, enjoy the fresh air and partake in activities, so they can experience “A Meaningful Journey”.
Jeff Morrone, who is on our maintenance staff, welded a bridge himself out of solid metal and branded it with “SV” for Sharmar Village at the top. The bridge was created to bring happiness to each resident and allow them to cross a bridge into a safe and peaceful space. As they cross, they were to leave all of their worries behind!
Once residents crossed the bridge, they were able to join in on meditation, yoga, prayer, tia chi, zen garden box, relax, reflect and enjoy tasty treats! Residents were encouraged to utilize each activity and stopping point as it suited them best. For example, Dementia residents were able to easily utilize each zen and rock garden box to rake, stack and garden peacefully. In the Natures Color Box, residents looked at and smelled each to absorb the stimulating, energizing, healing effect that the colors and smells have. The Tree of Life swayed back and forth with birds flying in and out for relaxation. Tai chi & Yoga utilized simple motions to stimulate muscles and breath along with meditation which focused on breathing exercises, encouraging residents to visualize something that is happy to them. Finally, the Prayer Box allowed them to write down a prayer physically and reflect on their faith. Along with each activity’s benefits, residents got their exercise from walking around to each stopping point.
Snacks and drinks of the residents were available to them after they completed the path. The residents that chose to stay inside were still able to participate in a different way. Our staff brought music and activities to their door – they could even request a song! While they listened to the music, the snack cart traveled throughout the building with drinks and snacks renamed to tell an inspirational message. Once they picked a snack, the residents received a quote or a painted rock quote that was inspirational and the activity assistant read the quote out loud.
There is no design or right or wrong way to do go about A Meaningful Journey. When the journey is complete the resident receives the ultimate balance of relaxation, brain stimulation and fun. It is important to the staff at Sharmar Village to provide activities and create a relaxing environment. Below are some photos from A Meaningful Journey.
